Saunas for open ground in the Carneros

Schellville is a crossroads community in the flat country south of Sonoma, where the valley opens up toward San Pablo Bay. The land here is mostly hay fields, vineyards, horse properties and old farmsteads, with houses set well apart and plenty of space around them. For a sauna that means room to spare, but it also means very little shelter.

Wind is the main design issue. Afternoon breezes come in off the bay most of the year and can blow hard across the Carneros. We anchor outdoor buildings firmly, use heavier roofing fastened to suit the exposure, and orient the door away from the prevailing wind so it does not slam or pull the heat out every time someone steps in. A windbreak of shrubs or a short fence line helps too. Dust from the fields in late summer gets into everything, so we fit screens on the intake vents that you can pull out and rinse.

Some parts of Schellville are low-lying and close to the sloughs and marshland, so we check flood zone maps and soil conditions before setting a pad. Clay soils here swell in winter and crack in summer, and a gravel base with good drainage keeps a building level over time. On adobe clay we sometimes set concrete piers below the depth where the ground moves, which costs a little more and saves a cracked floor later. As an unincorporated area, permits go through Permit Sonoma, and farmland zoning can have its own rules about accessory structures.

Larger parcels give you the freedom to build something bigger. We design custom saunas here with changing rooms, covered porches and a big window facing the fields, often clad in reclaimed barn wood so the building looks at home next to the old sheds. Large windows need thicker insulation elsewhere in the room to hold temperature, and we size the heater with that glass in mind.
