Round cedar rooms for the yard
Barrel rooms are built from heavy cedar staves curved into a tube and cinched with steel straps. With the corners gone there is less air to warm per seat, and the room comes up to heat fast. It sheds rain well and looks at home on a ranch, beside a vineyard or tucked behind a valley cottage. Dundalk, Almost Heaven and several other makers sell them as kits, and we build and set them.
The kit is only half the job. The shell needs a level, well-drained base, straps that are tightened as the wood settles, a roof covering in wet places and a properly wired heater. We handle all of it, from Glen Ellen hillsides to flat lots in Santa Rosa. If you would rather keep the heat under your own roof, our indoor saunas fit into garages and spare rooms.
Barrels suit small backyards, but they also work for inns and glamping properties that want a few units for guests. We set those through our commercial saunas service. If none of the stock sizes fit, our custom saunas can take the same round form and build it to your length and glass layout.
Setting a barrel so it lasts
Many barrels fail early because they sit on wet ground or never get their bands adjusted. A local cabin sauna builder who checks on those details makes a real difference in how long the shell stays tight.
- We build gravel, paver or concrete bases that shed water away from the staves.
- We use stainless fasteners near the coast, where salt air eats plain steel.
- We tighten bands after the first few heat cycles and again in the first season.
- We add a shingle or metal roof over the shell in damp west county yards.
- We install spark arrestors and clearances for wood stoves in fire zones.
- We trench power from the house and set a disconnect where code requires.
Why a barrel might be right

The yard is small
A four-person barrel takes about six by eight feet. That fits beside a patio in Rohnert Park or Cotati without taking over the lawn.
You want it fast
Once the base is ready, most barrels go together in one or two days. That is quicker than framing a cabin from scratch.
You live in fog country
In Sebastopol, Occidental and Guerneville the redwood damp is constant. A roofed barrel on a raised base sheds water and dries between uses.
You want wood heat
Barrels pair well with wood stoves. They heat fast, and a small stack of oak goes a long way. Keep an eye on burn-day notices during fire season.
You like the look
The curved cedar and round glass door make a barrel a centerpiece on a deck or in a garden, especially at dusk with the lights on.
How we set a barrel sauna
Site check
We choose a level, well-drained spot, check setbacks and fire clearances, and plan the power route or chimney.
Base and utilities
We build a gravel pad with pavers or a concrete slab, and trench power from the panel. The same planning applies to our garage and basement builds, but outside we also plan for runoff.
Assembly
We lay the cradles, fit the staves, tighten the bands, hang the door and set benches and heater.
First heat and follow-up
We fire the room, check for gaps and come back after the wood settles to tighten everything.
What goes into a good barrel
Barrels look simple, but a few details decide how long they last and how well they heat.
Wood species
Most barrels are western red cedar, prized for its scent and its resistance to decay. Thermo-treated spruce and pine are lower cost options. Knotty cedar costs less than clear.
Structure details
Thicker staves hold heat better. Stainless steel bands and cradles keep the shell round. A roof extends its life in wet or sunny spots.
Doors and glass
Full-glass ends, half-moon windows or solid cedar doors, each with a different balance of view and heat loss.
Heaters
Harvia and Huum electric heaters or Harvia and Iki wood stoves, sized for the barrel's small volume.
Benches and backrests
Bench height matters more in a round room. We set seats so your head is not pressed against the curve.
Barrel sauna costs
Expect to spend about eight thousand to twenty-two thousand dollars for a barrel set up and running in the county. Main factors:
- Barrel size and maker.
- Wood species and grade.
- Base type and site prep.
- Electric heater circuit or wood stove chimney.
- Roof covering and extra weatherproofing.

How do I choose the right sauna for a small backyard?
Measure the space and leave room for a path, clearances and a place to cool off. A two- to four-person barrel usually fits best. Think about privacy from neighbors, sun and drainage, and how far power has to run.
Can I have a sauna in my backyard?
Most Sonoma County properties can. Setbacks, height limits and fire rules vary by city and zone, and HOAs in some Windsor and Rohnert Park neighborhoods have their own rules. We check before you buy.
What permits are required for constructing an outdoor sauna?
The new circuit needs electrical sign-off, and bigger barrels or ones bolted to a slab usually add a building permit. In unincorporated areas that goes through Permit Sonoma. Wood stoves may need extra fire review.
Do barrel saunas leak?
A well-built barrel stays tight once the wood swells. New barrels may show small gaps at first. A roof and regular band adjustment keep water out.
How long does a barrel sauna last?
With a good base, a roof and yearly care, twenty years or more is common. Barrels sitting on wet ground or in full sun without a roof wear out faster.
