Boyes Hot Springs is part of the stretch along Highway 12 that locals call the Springs, together with Agua Caliente and Fetters Hot Springs. A century ago people came up from San Francisco on the train to soak in the mineral pools here, and the resort history still shows in the old hotel buildings and the names on the map. It is fitting that plenty of residents now want their own heat and steam at home.

Boyes Hot Springs is unincorporated, so the permits go to Permit Sonoma, even though the City of Sonoma is only a mile or two south. Older cabins here often have small electrical services and wiring that has been added onto many times. We look at the panel on the first visit, because a 240-volt heater circuit may need a service upgrade before anything else, and some older houses are better suited to a low-draw infrared room. Street parking is tight on many blocks near Highway 12, so we plan deliveries for early mornings and keep the job site tidy for the neighbours.
Sonoma Creek runs along the west side of the community, and parcels near it can have flood and setback limits. Winters here are cool and damp, summers are hot and dry, and we plan ventilation so the room dries out well after every session in either season. Tall valley oaks shade a lot of these lots, which is pleasant in July but means leaves pile up on a flat roof, so we pitch the roof enough to shed them.

We confirm with the City of Sonoma, Permit Sonoma or your own city before the work starts.

A traditional room heats the air to somewhere around 170 to 195 degrees, and you can pour water on hot stones for a wave of steam. An infrared room runs cooler, around 120 to 150, and warms your body directly with panels, so it feels gentler and uses less power. People who grew up with Finnish saunas tend to want the stove. People after a quick weeknight session often prefer infrared, and a hybrid room gives you both.
