Putting a hot room into a Sonoma County property
Getting a sauna into a house or onto a ranch parcel involves more trades than people expect. Somebody has to find amps in the panel, frame or reinforce the floor, lay in insulation and a foil barrier, cut the intake and exhaust in the right places, hang the paneling, build the benches and set the heater. Our own people cover all of it, which means one contractor on your driveway from the tape measure until the stones are hot.

Good reasons to bring in an installer
A lot of saunas can be bought online. Getting one to heat well, pass inspection and last is the part that needs a builder. These are the situations where we earn our fee.
The panel is already crowded
A 6kW to 9kW heater wants its own 240V breaker, typically 30 to 50 amps. Older valley houses and a fair number of rebuilt homes with heat pumps, EV chargers and well pumps have little room left. We run a load calculation and, when needed, plan a subpanel or service upgrade with PG&E before you spend money on a heater.
The sauna sits far from the house
On acreage the best spot is often a hundred feet or more from the main panel. Voltage drop over that distance means heavier wire and a proper trench depth. We size the conductors so the heater gets the power it was rated for and your room reaches temperature on time.
You are rebuilding after a fire
Many owners in Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Santa Rosa and the Mayacamas foothills are building new homes under the Chapter 7A wildland rules. Adding the sauna rough-in while framing is open costs far less than cutting into finished walls later, and we coordinate with your general contractor on the schedule.
You want wood heat for outage days
PG&E safety shutoffs have taught a lot of the county to value anything that works without the grid. Firewood heat lets you take a session with the power out, as long as you follow the air district's burn-day notices and keep the clearances the stove maker requires.
The kit instructions stop short
Kit manuals usually assume a level concrete slab and an electrician on call. Real sites have slopes, clay soil that heaves in wet winters and no clear path for a vent. We adapt the kit to the ground you actually have.
Our installation sequence
Walk the property
We look at the space or the yard, check the panel and the route for the wire, note drainage and access for materials, and find out who in the household plans to sweat and at what temperature.
Permit and rough-in
We submit plans to the right building department, then frame, insulate, run the dedicated circuit and cut the vent openings. The inspector sees the rough work before we close anything up.
Paneling, benches and heater
Tongue-and-groove boards go on the walls and ceiling, benches get built to your heights, and the heater is mounted and loaded with stones by hand, the heavy ones on the bottom.
First firing and handover
We run the break-in cycle with you, time how long the room takes to reach temperature, show you the controls and leave a short care sheet on the wall.

Sauna heaters
We install Harvia, Huum, Saunum and Tylo electric units plus Kuuma and Iki wood stoves. Output is matched to the room's cubic feet, with extra allowance for glass and log or uninsulated walls.
Wall and ceiling assembly
Framing at 16 inches on center, mineral wool or rigid foam, foil barrier with every seam taped toward the hot side, and a small air gap behind the boards so moisture can dry.
Airflow
Outside air comes in down by the stove and exits up on the far wall, though some layouts pull it out beneath the lower bench. Balanced airflow keeps your feet warm and your head clear.
Controls and lighting
Wall-mounted digital controls or app-connected units, placed outside the hot room when code calls for it, plus heat-rated LED strips tucked under the backrest and bench.
Accessories
Wooden or steel pails with a matching dipper, a dial thermometer, a humidity gauge, a sand timer, waterproof speakers and an aroma cup for a few drops of eucalyptus.

Home jobs in the county tend to start near nine thousand dollars when the room goes inside the house, and climb toward forty thousand when a detached cabin needs grading and a long wire trench. The main factors:

What are the electrical requirements for a sauna heater?
Most electric heaters for home rooms need a dedicated 240V circuit sized between 30 and 50 amps, with nothing else on that breaker. Bigger rooms can need 60 amps. Infrared cabins draw less and sometimes run on a 20-amp circuit. We confirm your panel can carry the load before you order equipment.
Can I install a sauna without a permit?
A freestanding infrared unit that plugs into an existing outlet usually needs no permit. New circuits, new framing, a wood stove flue or a detached structure generally do. In town that means the City of Sonoma Building Department, and in Glen Ellen, Kenwood or the Springs it means Permit Sonoma. We file the paperwork for you.
How long does the work take?
Our crew generally spends a week or two inside the house after the lumber and heater are delivered. Outdoor rooms with trenching and a foundation take three to five. Waiting on plan check comes first, and that wait depends on how backed up the office is that month.
Will a sauna run on a well and septic property?
A dry sauna uses no water at all, so the well and septic system are unaffected. If you want a rinse shower nearby, we check well pressure and septic setbacks first.
