Saunas on the Sonoma Coast at Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay is a fishing town and coastal community on the Sonoma Coast, with homes spread across the hills above the harbor and in developments like Bodega Harbour. Many are second homes or vacation rentals, and a lot of them have ocean views and decks facing the water. A sauna with a view of the bay is a common request. Others sit on larger rural parcels inland toward the town of Bodega, with open grassland and cattle on the neighboring land.

The coast is hard on buildings. Salt air corrodes ordinary hardware quickly, so we use stainless steel fasteners, hinges and fittings on everything exposed. The wind can be strong and steady, which calls for solid anchoring and a door placed out of the worst gusts. Fog and damp are common much of the year, and good ventilation keeps the wood from staying wet. We pick siding and trim that tolerate salt, and we finish exposed wood with a penetrating oil that is easy to renew.

Bodega Bay is unincorporated and sits inside the California coastal zone. That means permits through Permit Sonoma plus review under the county's Local Coastal Plan, and in some cases the California Coastal Commission. Rules about height, views and placement can be strict, and some areas also have homeowners association limits. We check all of this before design starts. Approval can take longer than inland, so we build extra time into the schedule.

Because of those rules, planning matters more here than almost anywhere else we work. Our custom sauna design process lays out the building, its height, its materials and its position on the lot so it has the best chance of approval and still frames the view you want. We also plan the heater and the electrical run so they can be serviced without heavy work on a finished deck. A low shed roof tucked below the ridgeline is often the easiest shape to get approved.

The cold Pacific makes a natural plunge, but many owners want something closer to the sauna door. A cold plunge install on the deck is easy to keep cold on the coast, since summer temperatures stay mild. We use corrosion-resistant equipment and covers built for wind, and we plan drainage so water does not pool on the deck. A good cover also keeps sand and salt spray out of the water between uses.
