Healdsburg: plaza cottages, wine country estates and inns

Healdsburg is a small town with a busy plaza at its center, surrounded by vineyards in the Dry Creek, Alexander and Russian River valleys. In town, the housing is mostly older cottages and craftsman homes on modest lots, with some newer builds on the edges. Outside town, you find vineyard homes and estates on large parcels with room for a pool house or a garden sauna. Some of those estates have older farmhouses and barns on them, and converting part of a barn into a hot room is a project we enjoy.

The 2019 Kincade fire led to evacuations across Healdsburg and nearby Windsor, and people here take wildfire seriously. We build outdoor rooms with ember-resistant vents and fire-safe roofing, and we keep stove chimneys well clear of trees. Summers are hot, often well into the 90s and above, and winters are cool and wet, so good insulation matters in both directions. Properties along the Russian River south of town can also flood in big storms, so equipment placement gets a second look there.

Healdsburg is an incorporated city, and permits inside city limits go through the City of Healdsburg building department. Properties outside city limits fall under Permit Sonoma. The town also has design review for work in its historic areas, which we check early for any building visible from the street. Inside the historic core, a low roofline and wood siding in a muted color usually make that review go smoothly.

Healdsburg has a lot of inns, vacation rentals and wine country lodging, and many owners want a spa feature for guests. We build commercial saunas for these properties with hard-wearing materials, timers and controls that guests can use without a lesson, and the safety details an inspector expects for shared use. We also plan for heavy use, with a heater sized to recover quickly after the door opens and benches built from wood that can be sanded and refreshed each season.

At home, many clients pair a sauna with a soak. A cedar tub install next to a pool, or a Japanese soaking tub inside a remodeled bathroom, is a common add-on here. We plan drainage, heating and covers so the tub holds up through a long summer of use and does not sit empty all winter. In a small in-town yard, a cedar tub with a fitted cover often takes up less space than a sauna and still gives you a warm soak on a cold evening.
